The Stone once stood 16 feet high and weighed 30 tons. Erosion over the centuries, inflicted by the guards themselves, has removed a great mass of the rock, and formed a tributary of the Red River, known as Yellow Bayou. The acidity of the bayou makes it difficult for plants to flourish at water level.
