When my father was a child at Melrose Plantation, he went to Bermuda School by boat, because the meandering Cane River forced a twenty mile bus journey each way. Then they built this bridge, shortening the bus trip to five miles.
When I was in college, this was a favored swimming area, the bridge was great for diving, and nearby there was a sandy shell beach. Now the bridge has been replaced by a modern concrete structure (mirrored in the water)
