The columns at Northwestern are remnants of the Bullard Mansion, a plantation home that was one of the original buildings of Louisiana State Normal School. There were once four columns, but myth has it that a visiting governor's wife declared they were "not artistic," so one was taken down. The columns stand in the old quad now, no longer a quad, after the loss of two buildings to fire in the last 20 years. The three columns have become an icon at NSU.
