Our church, one of the oldest in
town, is having some brick work done to make it ADA Compliant. Bricks
from the old stairs are being saved to go into the new structure.
These came from the St. Joe Brick Works in Slidell, Louisiana.
That company is still in existence and is
one of only a very few plants that uses the soft-mud process in which
clay is formed into individual bricks in wooden moulds as was done a
century ago.
The name on the brick prints in the
mortar. Brick sidewalks, streets, and buildings all over the U.S.
since 1891 have had St Joe bricks in them.
