William Barney Carter

July 15 1842 Born 16 miles from Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina.

April 27, 1861, Enlisted Tucaho, NC Mustered into CO. D 27th Regiment, NC Infantry Confederate Army

Sept. 17, 1862 Wounded at Sharpsburg, MD;  Many (minie?) ball through left shoulder*

Dec. 3, 1862 out of Hospital No. 9 Richmond, VA. Furloughed

June 15, 1863 registered at Hospital No 9

Oct. 21, 1863 registered 3rd General Hospital  Richmond.

Aug. 23, 1864 back into CO. D

March 31, 1865 Captured by General Turner & Foster at Humphrey's Station, VA.

April 2, 1865 POW City Point, VA

June 24, 1865 Released as Prisoner at Point Lookout, MD and sent to Kinston, NC

1873 Married Elizabeth Mobley Thompson (Jan 19, 1851-Jul 15, 1887) Six Children:  William A., Marietta, Hettie B., Daniel, John N., Eugene

1888 Married Sarah Barsheeba Phillips Thompson. (Oct 28, 1852-Dec 7, 1919)  Two Children, Linnie, R. Barney.

Aug. 28, 1900  Applied for Soldier's Pension

February 16, 1924 William B. Carter died  at Montgomery, Louisiana

*The battle ended, neither side having gained an advantage. Out of 325 present for duty the 27th NC lost 31 killed and 168 wounded, a casualty rate of over 61%. Dean Harry  Estimated total casualties: 23,100.
